Some of the deadliest roads in America are in Florida
A new survey published by transportation researchers at EverQuote found that three of Florida’s highways have the highest fatality rates in the country. Interstate 95 which was ranked 5th deadliest, runs 1,926 miles between Miami and Houlton Maine. Interstate 4, a roadway which connects Daytona Beach and Tampa was ranked as the deadliest and I-10, which runs from Jacksonville to Santa Monica, California was ranked seventh on the list. These three roads have found themselves in the top ten deadliest roads in the U.S. for the past six years.
Using data from the NHTSA and the Federal Highway Administration, Geotab has identified U.S. Highway 1 as having had the highest number of deadly crashes of any road in the U.S. in the past 10 years. In the previous decade, there have been 1,011 deadly crashes which resulted in 1,079 fatalities on U.S. 1, which runs through 13 Florida counties from Key West in the south to Hilliard at the border with Georgia.
Common causes of car accidents
Among the most common causes of car crashes in the U.S. is distracted driving. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 are injured in crashes involving distracted drivers. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that about 28 people die every day in the U.S. in an alcohol-related crash–which adds up to one person getting killed every 51 minutes. In 2015, there were 10,265 deaths from alcohol-impaired traffic crashes in the U.S. Drowsy driving is another culprit for causing traffic crashes which result in injuries and death. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found in a study that drowsy drivers are involved in an estimated 21% of fatal traffic crashes. In a 2016 study, the Foundation revealed that crash risk rises dramatically with only one or two hours less sleep than the recommended seven or eight hours of sleep each night.
Other causes of car crashes include:
- Aggressive driving
- Debris in the roadway
- Night driving
- Unsafe lane changes
- Improper turns
- Defective roadway design
- Poor weather conditions
